Groceries, fuel and home repairs: what Ukrainians spent their money on in September

Groceries and fuel remain the top everyday spending categories for Ukrainians. In September, grocery supermarkets accounted for 38% of turnover across Raiffeisen Bank's acquiring network, with another 19% going to gas stations.
According to the bank's data, the top five spending categories for September 2026 also included building materials and timber (8.05%), clothing (4%), and specialty grocery stores (3.16%). Together, these categories made up roughly 72% of turnover across the bank's terminal network. The remainder went toward transport, services, electronics, HoReCa and other categories.
The average check at supermarkets in September came to UAH 286, while at gas stations Ukrainians spent an average of UAH 968 per purchase. The largest average checks, however, weren't for groceries or fuel: clothing store purchases averaged UAH 2,043, and building materials purchases averaged UAH 1,018.
"For Ukrainians, the bank card has become the primary payment tool across every sphere - from the grocery store to the building materials market," says Yevhen Vasyltsov, Head of the Acquiring Department at Raiffeisen Bank. "Today we're expanding our acquiring network and making card payment acceptance as convenient and technologically advanced as possible for all of retail, small business and entrepreneurs. Signing up for card payment acceptance and ordering a POS terminal can now be done straight from a smartphone, and our terminals continue accepting payments for a long time even after a power outage - blackouts no longer stop businesses from operating and earning revenue."
In total, in September 2026 Ukrainians paid UAH 22 billion through Raiffeisen Bank's POS terminals, with an average check of UAH 443.
