Equipment funded by Raiffeisen Bank is already helping treat patients at Superhumans

Since 2024, Raiffeisen Bank has provided UAH 6 million in charitable support to the Superhumans Center for Prosthetics and Reconstructive Surgery. The funds were allocated to the purchase of modern medical equipment, which is already being used to treat patients with severe injuries, as well as to upgrade inpatient facilities.

In 2025, with Raiffeisen’s support, Superhumans received VAC systems — devices that accelerate the healing of complex wounds and reduce the risk of infection. In addition, the center acquired an ophthalmic laser photocoagulator for the treatment of retinal injuries and the prevention of vision loss. The equipment is already in daily use, supporting patients with severe trauma and helping to shorten their recovery time.

The effectiveness of VAC systems

To understand the practical impact of this support, it is enough to hear directly from the patients.

“It was a mine-blast injury. I was walking behind the group when the mine detonated. A fragment shattered the bone in my leg. The evacuation lasted two days — I was transported by boat and quad bike,” says a veteran currently undergoing treatment at Superhumans. According to him, the use of a VAC system significantly eased his recovery process.

At Superhumans, specialists note that this technology is one of the key tools in treating combat-related injuries. The VAC system operates by applying negative pressure to the wound, creating an environment in which bacteria cannot thrive, reducing infection levels, and minimizing the number of dressing changes, which are often painful for patients. As a result, wounds heal faster — in some cases up to three times faster — leading to fewer complications and a quicker transition to the next stage of rehabilitation.

Laser photocoagulator helps preserve vision

The transfer of the laser photocoagulator has been equally important. While VAC systems accelerate wound healing, the laser provides patients with a chance to preserve their vision and prevent irreversible damage.

“As a result of a head injury, I almost lost vision in my right eye. I’m not very familiar with diopters, but I think it’s around minus 12. I can only see partially, like a lower crescent. Now doctors are using the laser to strengthen the retina and prevent further deterioration,” says another veteran receiving treatment at the center. According to him, the laser procedure helps stabilize his condition and prevent further vision loss.

Superhumans specialists explain that the photocoagulator allows doctors to precisely target damaged areas of the eye and prevent retinal detachment. Laser coagulation effectively secures the affected areas, ensuring retinal stability. This is critical to preventing further vision deterioration and avoiding serious complications in the future.

Systemic support

Support for Superhumans is part of Raiffeisen Bank’s broader long-term commitment to Ukraine. Since February 2022, the bank has allocated UAH 1.9 billion to support the country, including medical assistance, humanitarian initiatives, support for veterans, and programs aimed at business and national development.
